As we like to say at BNA, you get your eyes checked and you get your teeth checked, so you should get your ears checked too. Yet, many people still treat their hearing differently. Dr. Arica Rock, Au.D explains some of the common reasons why that extra hesitation and reluctance seem to exist, and assures us that a hearing test doesn’t hurt. Watch more Q&As, then schedule your appointment with BNA at our Bloomington-Normal or Pontiac, IL locations.
Evan in Pontiac asks, “Why do you think people are reluctant to get their hearing checked?” That’s a great question. A lot of people do put off getting their hearing tested. I don’t know if the word “test” has a bad connotation. If they just don’t know what’s gonna happen, but as I always say, it doesn’t hurt to get a hearing test. It’s never too soon to get a baseline, even if you don’t really think that you’re having a problem, it’s great to have that baseline so if you do experience a change down the road, we have something to compare it to. I think a lot of patients come in because their family members force them to. A lot of people are concerned with how much it’s gonna cost. Just reluctant to wear hearing aids because they think it makes them look old. A lot of patients say, I don’t feel like I’m old enough to have hearing loss. But hearing loss can occur at any age due to many different things. Just because you have hearing loss doesn’t make you old. There’s no reason to be reluctant to get your hearing checked. As I said, it’s never too early. At any age, it’s always good to have a baseline. And even if you don’t feel you have a problem, the knowledge is key. I’m Dr. Arica Rock from Bloomington-Normal Audiology, and we’re ‘hear’ for you.
