For many people, the cost of hearing aids can be an understandable factor that causes them to delay taking action. But if your insurance covers them, then cost might be less of an issue. So, will insurance pay for your hearing aids? You probably won’t be surprised to hear that it’s complicated. Dr. Natalie McKee, Au.D. shares a helpful, big picture overview. Watch more Q&As, then schedule your appointment with BNA at our Bloomington-Normal or Pontiac, IL offices.
Rebecca in Pontiac asks, “Are hearing aids covered by insurance?” That is a complicated answer. So I’m gonna say sometimes and sort of. In the state of Illinois as of January 1, 2025, all insurance companies have to offer a policy of coverage. And that has to include one hearing aid every 36 months. Many people have taken that as a blanket statement that “my policy should now have coverage.” But that isn’t how this works. This is designed to mandate the insurance companies to provide you an OFFERING. You should see them across all platforms, but it won’t be with every policy, and the coverages may be different depending on the premiums that are associated with those policies. It really is important for you to be proactive and not only ask if there is a policy with the benefit, but then HOW is that benefit administered. So we are happy to help you know the questions to ask, but it really comes down to a personal conversation with you and your provider or your broker to meet not only your hearing health needs, but also your overall medical needs with the policy that’s best for you. I’m Dr. Natalie McKee from Bloomington-Normal Audiology, and we’re ‘hear’ for you.
