Not sure whether to use earplugs or earmuffs? The answer depends on what you’re protecting your ears from, and how often you’ll wear them. Dr. Arica Rock, Au.D. breaks down the options, from custom-molded plugs to high-tech muffs, and explains how to choose the right fit for your lifestyle.
Michelle in Pontiac asks, “What are the different types of earplugs and earmuffs? When should I use one over the other?” That’s a great question. There are lots of different types of earplugs and earmuffs. I would say the most important factors are going to be fit and comfort. You want them to fit well in order to be effective, and you want them to be comfortable so you’ll want to wear them. There are earplugs you can buy over-the-counter, or you can have them custom-made and molded for your ears. If you buy them over-the-counter, you’ll want to make sure they are inserted properly and fit well in order to be effective. There are solid plugs and filtered plugs. If you’re around something that is pretty loud, you’re probably going to want solid plugs because that’s going to block more of the noise, where filtered plugs are going to let some of that ambient sound in. There’s also several types of earmuffs, such as standard ones that physically block the sound. But there’s also electronic earmuffs that can allow for conversation. There are many types of earplugs and earmuffs. The best choice for you is going to depend on the use and the fit.
